The Importance of Maintaining Family Ties During Imprisonment - Perspectives of Those Involved in HMP New Hall's Family Support Project

This article presents an evaluation of a Family Support Project delivered at HMP New Hall, a closed women's prison, and includes a literature review of research regarding women offenders and children affected by parental imprisonment.

The evaluation found that the project was highly valued by prisoners, family member and the prison, and viewed as an important resource to help maintain family ties. The article explores different aspects of the project, and includes quotes from interviews with prisoners and family members. The article concludes by stating that there is a strong argument for the prison and welfare services to allocate more funding to supporting female prisoners, both during sentences and as part of rehabilitation.
