How can schools support children with a parent in prison? Pastoral Care in Education

Children who experience parental imprisonment are more likely to have difficulties at school, this peer reviewed and open access article reports on research into support for children of prisoners in schools in one local authority.

Data from interviews with head teachers, stakeholders, parents and children reveal the different realities of having a parent or close relative inside. The article is critical of current support provision and suggests how schools might raise awareness of children of prisoners using posters and training, focus on the children's needs, explore type of support needed and when it should be available, discuss how schools can support children in maintaining contact with imprisoned relatives and possibility of support to attend prison visits. Findings essentially pointed to a need for sensitive, appropriate, bespoke service provision for each child. Learn about Pastoral Care in Education via your Taylor and Franics log in.
