Barnardo's NICCO: Assisting Prisons to safeguard children with a key attachment figure in custody

This document contains a poster and two page briefing on how prisons can safeguard children with a key attachment figure in custody.

The briefing summarises some of the key outcomes for these children, and highlights the importance of protecting them from harm. Prison Officers have a responsibility to be alert to the wellbeing of children visiting an inmate, to the risks posed by others in attendance, and to the potential impact of the visiting process. Overall safeguarding responsbility sits with the Prison Govenor or Director, however staff must ensure all concerns are reported. The briefing outlines what policies and procedures should be in place to ensure this is effectively done, and highlights how NICCO can help prisons in this process. The poster and briefing include direct quotes from families and examples of practice.
