Education of Children with a Parent or Close relative in Prison or at Risk of a Custodial Sentence

This document, produced by Gloucestershire County Council, provides guidance on how schools and educational establishments in Gloucestershire should support children with a family member in prison.

The guidelines aim to raise awareness of the needs of children with a parent in prison and ensure positive outcomes and educational achievement for these children. The document also aims to promote social inclusion and share best practice across the local authority. The guidelines provide a brief background and outline the potential negative impact of the imprisonment of a family member on children's outcomes. The issues of information sharing and the identification of children with a parent in prison are discussed, and responsibilities suggested for a designated teacher or named person within the school. Finally, guidance for teachers working with children affected by imprisonment is given, concerning children confiding in teachers, bullying, attendance issues and so on.
