Peterborough Safeguarding Children Board - Policy for the Education of Children with a Parent or Close Relative in Prison or at Risk of a Custodial Sentence

This policy document, produced for schools, aims to ensure commitment from educational settings to be aware of offenders children's needs.

It includes spaces within the text to input the name of the school, dates of endorsement of the Policy by Peterborough SCB and the school governerning body and date for a review of the policy. The document clearly lays out strategies and tools to be used in order to meet the aims of ensuring the educational and emotional wellbeing of offenders children e.g. dissemination of information, having a designated go-to member of staff etc. It also offers practical guidance for teachers around confiding, disclosure, who to inform whilst working within a need to know framework, recognising signs of a child experiencing loss, bullying, attendance, prison visits, financial difficulties and information around children of prisoners held overseas. The 3 appendices include information about how having a parent in prison can put a child at risk of meeting the Every Child Matters outcomes, guidance on information sharing and a short leaflet for Parents and Carers called 'Education of a Child with a Parent or Close Relative in Prison'.
