Families Outside

Families Outside is the only national charity in Scotland that works solely to support families affected by imprisonment.

The aim of the charity is to mitigate the effects of imprisonment on children and families, and consequently to reduce the likelihood of re-offending through support and information for families and for other organisations working with them. Families Outside supports children and families affected by imprisonment through their Families Outside Support and Information Helpline. They also have Family Support Workers who provide direct support to children and families throughout Scotland. Families Outside runs the Visitors' Centre at HMP Addiewell, providing support to families visiting the prison, and has a presence in several other Scottish prison visitors' centres. Families Outside offers bespoke training and awareness-raising to a range of professionals and are involved in the development of policy and practice as well as campaigning and research. Families Outside has developed an in-prison training workshop specifically for teachers and demand for this exceeds capacity.
