Guidelines for Working with Children who have a 'Family' Member in Prison (Buckinghamshire)

These guidelines have been developed by Buckinghamshire County Council to highlight to school staff and other staff working with children, the key issues for children with a family member in prison and the impact of this on their school and social life.

The guidelines aim to raise awareness and understanding of these children’s needs, promote social inclusion and equal opportunities, and develop a consistent approach and good practice across the local authority. The guidelines outline the potential barriers specific to children of prisoners achieving the 'Every Child Matters' outcomes. They also outline how schools can develop their approach, including; confidentiality, the role of a designated teacher, awareness of staff and classroom management. The guidelines also include information about the impact that imprisonment of a parent can have on children, information about release, and useful contacts.
