Out There

Out There offers a free and confidential service for those affected by a family members' imprisonment in the Greater Manchester area.

Out There provides friendship and information in order to alleviate, in some measure, the isolation and difficulties facing families in finding sources of information and support at a very stressful time. Out There's services cover the Greater Manchester area supporting families from arrest to release.

Out There aims:

  • To reduce the isolation experienced by families of prisoners.
  • To maintain family ties.
  • To increase the number and involvement of volunteers.
  • To increase awareness in the wider community of the issues for prisoners' families.

With the exception of the helpline, only families accessing the case work support service are able to benefit from the interventions.

Interventions available include: home visits, telephone support, families helpline, a support group for families of sex offenders and a pre-release support group, a Family Forum with HMP Manchester, Outreach at HMP Manchester Visitor Centre and HMP Forest Bank, Hidden Sentence training, Parenting support, Hardship Fund for existing clients, events such as Wellbeing days.

The work is supported by a number of trained volunteers. Out There offers a family centred holistic service through these interventions. It is therefore focused mainly on enabling them to strengthen family life with children benefiting indirectly from this support.

In the future, Out There hopes to provide more child specific interventions.
