Prison Voicemail is a service enabling families to exchange voicemail messages with their loved ones in prison.
How it works: the family member dials a unique landline number from their mobile phone and leaves a message, which the prisoner can receive and reply to from any phone in the prison. The cost of the service is borne by the family member, who pays to leave messages. The prisoner pays the normal price of a landline call to receive or reply to messages. A recent customer survey found that 83% of prisoners and 92% of families say the service makes the sentence easier on them. Founded in 2015, Prison Voicemail is a social venture based in Norwich, UK. Its mission is to use technology to improve communication channels between prisoners and the outside world. It has partnered with the University of Lincoln to track and evaluate the impact of its service.
