Prisoners Abroad

Prisoners Abroad is a UK-based support organisation for Britons held in and returning from prison abroad and their families.

For families they offer a freephone number for information and support from Monday to Friday, 9.30am to 4.30pm. Prisoners Abroad runs regular family support events across the country, to enable relatives to share their experiences in a safe, friendly and non-judgemental environment, and can advise on planning a visit and how to prepare for a family member coming back home. Their website contains downloadable factsheets which aim to bring clarity to some of the frequently-asked questions about having a family member in prison abroad, such as housing, finances, whether the person can serve their sentence in the UK, dealing with the media, as well as an A-Z list of information about various countries' penal systems.

Prisoners Abroad staff also speak French and Spanish and offer practical help with translating documents into and out of many other languages.

Prisoners Abroad have an online family network which is an opportunity for people affected by overseas imprisonment to meet and engage online, to discuss and share their knowledge and experience with each other, creating an online community of mutual respect and support in a non-judgmental space.
